| Strength of bone and sinew, courage of spirit, precision of execution, these are evident in the figures, but they appear mechanical. The source of the strength and the spirit, the force behind the performance must be in the face. But the face is masked. The mask is a smile but the soul is hidden. These powerful figures dominated the people below, all other realities are suspended as these balanced performers defy danger and failure. We see them at their best but we cannot know them. |
